Information about EVORA Évora is located about 150km south east of Lisbon, on top of a hill on the vast Alentejo plain. It is dominated by its imposing cathedral, with its two unequal towers. The surrounding area provided open mining of copper and iron, and quarrying of high quality marble. Initially, this city was captured from the Moors by the Portuguese. Later, Évora became more important in the Middle Ages, when it was chosen by the Jesuits as a seat of learning and culture. Its University was founded in the 16th Century. Declared by UNESCO as one of their World Heritage Sites, the city hosts many interesting buildings and ancient remains, which date as far back as to the Dolmens and Neolithic times. Signs of the Roman occupation cnan be found in the region surrounding Évora, such as ruins of a Roman Temple dedicated to the Goddess Diana, various sections of wall and the gate known as the Porta de Dona Isabel, as well as the ruins of the city's Roman baths under the present-day Town Hall. Another attractive feature of Évora is the 15th Century Convento dos Lóios, and a macabre reminder of Ëvora’s past is the Capela dos Ossos, built in the 15th Century, and located in the Igreja de Săo Francisco. Here lie the bones of some 5.000 monks, with sign above the entrance which reads “we bones that here await yours”. There are several museums, principally the Museu de Arte Sacra, Galeria de Arte Casa Cadaval, the Museu de Artes Decorativas Religiosas and the Museu de Évora. You also can find a small gallery exhibiting painting of fantastic mermaids, trees and animals from India, commissioned by Vasco da Gama when he lived in Évora. You also can visit the Convento de Santa Clara, founded in 1452. A specialty of the town is the “Păo de Rala” bread-cake made with pumpkin.
